Monegal Ana , Peris Pilar , Cuervo Andrea , Muxi Africa , Gifre Laia , Guanabens Nuria

Introduction: Liver transplant candidates have bone and mineral metabolism disorders that may influence the development of fractures after liver transplantation (LT).Objective: To analyze the levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) in patient candidates for LT and the factors associated with vitamin D deficiency. Methods: Between January 2010 and May 2012, 116 liver transplant candidates (85 male and 31 female patients) were include...

Alekna Vidmantas , Mastaviciute Asta , Kilaite Justina , Tamulaitiene Marija

Objective: To investigate the relationship of frailty with vitamin D in community dwelling elderly women.Materials and methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on women over 60 years who were not using vitamin D supplementations. Frailty status was defined using Fried’s criteria: weakness, low walking speed, low physical activity, weight loss, exhaustion. Participants were classified as robust, prefrail and frail if they scored 0...

Vitamin D deficiency rickets in neonates

Paterson Colin R , Ayoub David

This paper reviews clinical reports of vitamin D deficiency rickets in neonates from 1930 onwards. In 24 reports there was good evidence of maternal deficiency. In some the diagnosis of the rickets led to the identification of symptomatic osteomalacia in the mothers; several had been severe and longstanding. Of the 15 mothers who had assays for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) 13 had values <25 nmol/l (10 ng/ml) and 10 had values <12.5 nmol/l (5 ng/ml).<p class="a...

Background: It is now known that the osteoporosis starts developing childhood. Children’s age is characterized by intensive accumulation of bone mass. By the end of puberty the level of bone mass in many parts of the skeleton reaches 86% of the bone mass of an adult and in some parts it reaches 100%.The processes of bone metabolism closely connected with the level of the vitamin D, in the body because it has a pronounced effect on calcium homeostasi...

Relevance of vitamin D to pathogenesis and treatment of osteoporosis

Matsumoto Toshio

In order to maintain bone remodeling balance, it is important to keep enough Ca absorption from the intestine. Vitamin D is required to increase Ca absorption from the gut. Because vitamin D acts via activation to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] in the kidney, native vitamin D cannot exert its full effect when the activation process is disturbed. Renal impairment is the main cause of deterioration of the activation of vitamin D. Aging is associated with the dev...

Povoroznyuk Vladyslav , Balatska Nataliya

The aim of the research: To investigate the effect of combined calcium and vitamin D therapy (calcium 1000 mg, vitamin D 400 IU) on 25(OH)D level and concentration of bone turnover markers in patients with systemic postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods: 20 women with systemic postmenopausal osteoporosis were examined. The average age of the patients was (63.0 (59.00; 68.00)) years. The study was performed during winter season to exclude the influence of se...

Effects of single bolus injection of vitamin D on serum FGF23, Sclerostin and DKK1 concentrations in vitamin D-deficient subjects

Dong Jang Dong , Choi Hoon , Lim Sung-Kil

Objective: Bone is one of endocrine organ and osteocytes secretes FGF23, Sclerostin and DKK1. FGF23 inhibits renal phosphate reabsorption and suppresses 1-α hydroxylase activity. Calcitriol stimulates FGF23 synthesis in bone. We aimed to determine the effect of single bolus injection of vitamin D on serum FGF23, DKK1 and Sclerostin concentrations in vitamin D-deficient subjects.Design and methods: The study group was composed of placebo group with s...
