Vitamin D deficiency rickets in neonates

Paterson Colin R , Ayoub David

This paper reviews clinical reports of vitamin D deficiency rickets in neonates from 1930 onwards. In 24 reports there was good evidence of maternal deficiency. In some the diagnosis of the rickets led to the identification of symptomatic osteomalacia in the mothers; several had been severe and longstanding. Of the 15 mothers who had assays for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) 13 had values <25 nmol/l (10 ng/ml) and 10 had values <12.5 nmol/l (5 ng/ml).<p class="a...

State of vitamin D sufficiency Ukrainian schoolchildren

Povoroznyuk Vladyslav , Balatska Nataliya , Budnik Tetyana , Erokchina O

Background: It is now known that the osteoporosis starts developing childhood. Children’s age is characterized by intensive accumulation of bone mass. By the end of puberty the level of bone mass in many parts of the skeleton reaches 86% of the bone mass of an adult and in some parts it reaches 100%.The processes of bone metabolism closely connected with the level of the vitamin D, in the body because it has a pronounced effect on calcium homeostasi...

Relevance of vitamin D to pathogenesis and treatment of osteoporosis

Matsumoto Toshio

In order to maintain bone remodeling balance, it is important to keep enough Ca absorption from the intestine. Vitamin D is required to increase Ca absorption from the gut. Because vitamin D acts via activation to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] in the kidney, native vitamin D cannot exert its full effect when the activation process is disturbed. Renal impairment is the main cause of deterioration of the activation of vitamin D. Aging is associated with the dev...

Children's multivitamins do not contain sufficient vitamin D

Moon Rebecca , Curtis Elizabeth , Cooper Cyrus , Davies Justin , Harvey Nicholas

Objective: Public Health England recommends that children in the United Kingdom (UK) aged over 1 year should take a vitamin D supplement containing 400 IU/day. Commercially available children’s multivitamin and vitamin D supplements were surveyed to determine the vitamin D content. Methods: Multivitamins and vitamin D supplements marketed at children <12 years and sold by nine UK supermarkets and health supplement retailers were surveyed. The vit...

Correction of vitamin D deficiency in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis

Povoroznyuk Vladyslav , Balatska Nataliya

The aim of the research: To investigate the effect of combined calcium and vitamin D therapy (calcium 1000 mg, vitamin D 400 IU) on 25(OH)D level and concentration of bone turnover markers in patients with systemic postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods: 20 women with systemic postmenopausal osteoporosis were examined. The average age of the patients was (63.0 (59.00; 68.00)) years. The study was performed during winter season to exclude the influence of se...

Seasonal variation in internet searches for vitamin D

Moon Rebecca , Curtis Elizabeth , Davies Justin , Cooper Cyrus , Harvey Nicholas

Objective: Over the last decade, there has been increasing scientific interest in vitamin D, and it is now advised that all pregnant women and infants should receive vitamin D supplementation. Despite of this, it is recognized that knowledge of vitamin D in the general public is limited. The internet is now an important source of health care information and analysis of internet search activity rates can provide information on disease epidemiology, health related behaviors and ...

Effects of single bolus injection of vitamin D on serum FGF23, Sclerostin and DKK1 concentrations in vitamin D-deficient subjects

Dong Jang Dong , Choi Hoon , Lim Sung-Kil

Objective: Bone is one of endocrine organ and osteocytes secretes FGF23, Sclerostin and DKK1. FGF23 inhibits renal phosphate reabsorption and suppresses 1-α hydroxylase activity. Calcitriol stimulates FGF23 synthesis in bone. We aimed to determine the effect of single bolus injection of vitamin D on serum FGF23, DKK1 and Sclerostin concentrations in vitamin D-deficient subjects.Design and methods: The study group was composed of placebo group with s...

Vitamin D overdose: Poor dosage guidelines for babies?

Peeva Daniela , Jacobs Benjamin

Background: A 9-month-old boy was diagnosed with rickets at the age of 6 months. He was born at term in India, following a normal pregnancy. Mother had taken folic acid and calcium, but not vitamin D, as this is the policy for pregnancy vitamins in Kerala.Presenting problems: At 6 months of age he was seen for routine vaccination. The paediatrician noted a prominent forehead and swollen wrists. Wrist x-ray was said to show early rickets. Blood tests show...

Vitamin D deficiency and prevention; what is the position of European Calcified Tissue Society?

Adami Silvano , Bischoff-Ferrari Heike , Bouillon Roger , Cashman Kevin , Fuleihan Ghada El-Hajj , Lamberg-Allardt Christel , Obermayer-Pietsch Barbara , Lips Paul

Vitamin D deficiency is common within Europe and the Middle East, especially in risk groups. While treatment is simple, there is no consensus on the diagnostic threshold for deficiency and the required dose. The Institute of Medicine and the Endocrine Society have established guidelines on the required 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels, supplementation doses and (extra)skeletal effects of vitamin D, coming to very different conclusions. The European Calcified Tissue Society...

Influence of vitamin D deficiency on bone turnover markers in men of different age

Balatska Nataliya , Povoroznyuk Vladyslav

Introduction: Optimal 25(OH)D serum level is very important for bone health and calcium–phosphate homeostasis as well as for optimal function of many organs and tissues. The consequences of vitamin D deficiency are mineralization defects, which may lead to osteomalacia in the long-term, and muscle weakness, causing falls and fractures. Objectives: The aim of the research is to determine the frequency of vitamin D deficiency and it’s influence on...
