Osteoclasts are highly specialized cell types, responsible for the resorption of bone matrix. Coordinated with osteoblasts they contribute to a proper bone turnover. An impaired or reduced function of the osteoclast leads to a pathogenic increase of the bone mass and finally osteopetrosis.
