Hypoparathyroidism is a disorder characterized by hypocalcemia, low or absent parathyroid hormone (PTH), and abnormal bone remodeling. The diagnosis is made in the setting of hypocalcemia with markedly reduced or absent PTH levels. Postoperative hypoparathyroidism is the most common etiology.
